Why it matters

Waterton's Wanderings is one of the best-known first-hand British accounts of the Guiana interior and the Antilles, mixing field observation of tropical birds and animals with the notorious set-pieces (the ride on the cayman, the search for curare) that made it a durable classic of travel writing. The 1825 quarto is also the first appearance of his "Nondescript" frontispiece, the taxidermied composite creature that fed his reputation as a naturalist-eccentric. Waterton rode on the backs of caimans to study them up close, reportedly kept preserved human remains in his home, and the book's "Nondescript Man" is a bizarre composite creature he fabricated from animal parts that nearly caused a public uproar when unveiled.

Why we're looking

$400 from an ABAA/ILAB member for a first edition described as being in original boards and uncut is the kind of number worth a look, since most catalogued copies I could find are in later or rebound leather rather than as-issued boards. The unrestored, wide-margined state is the appeal here — subject to the seller's own note that the joints are scuffed with the mull showing.

Watch out for

The seller's own description flags the real issue: exposed mull at the joints means the binding is structurally tired, and original boards in that state often need a box or sympathetic repair, so ask for photographs of the spine and hinges. The stated collation lists the frontispiece but does not mention a half-title, and at least one catalogued first edition of this book is described as having one — worth asking the seller directly whether it is present. Ownership markings and light foxing are disclosed but not quantified.
