Who so ever will travail in the sciences with profit, must lean rather to reason, than to authority, else he may be deceived.Robert Recorde — The Castle of Knowledge (1556)The woodcut used for our homepage banner is drawn from the title page of the same book.
Interesting books, market discovery, and the pleasure of finding beautiful things.
Old Book Hunter is a small, regular dispatch of antiquarian books worth a second look, picked by a human curator. See How We Choose for the method behind each issue.
Each book is unique, having passed through hands and traveled through foreign lands. The smell, the texture, the fragility, the margin notes — every copy carries its own small history, separate from whatever's printed on the page. In this age of digitization, a physical book like this makes our intellectual and cultural origins all the more tangible. Our human patrimony, in your hands.
At Old Book Hunter, we focus on books published between 1500 and 1850, primarily in Europe, touching on a range of secular subjects — travelogues, early sciences of all stripes, philosophy, history, current events, and politics. Really anything we would have wanted to know if we'd lived when these books were published.
Old book hunting is a passion for us, and it can be for you. We started Old Book Hunter because we simply couldn't afford — and didn't have the shelf space for — all the amazing finds we kept coming across.
Rare books can be expensive, but that's not always the case. There are genuinely interesting and affordable antiquarian finds out there. Some may have condition issues that put a ceiling on their long-term value, but these treasures can still give their owners years of enjoyment.
