Why it matters

Niekamp's digest of the Halle reports is a principal early printed source on the Danish-Halle mission at Tranquebar, the first organized Protestant mission in Asia, and on Ziegenbalg and Plütschau's pioneering engagement with Tamil language, religion and the 1715 Tamil New Testament. The French translation carried that material to a Francophone readership and remains a standard citation in histories of Protestant missions, Tamil printing and early European ethnography of South India.

A mid-18th-century Geneva imprint on Tranquebar in what the seller calls a very good, handsomely bound mottled calf set, offered on eBay at $499.95 by a high-volume general bookseller rather than a specialist in early travel or mission literature — the kind of channel where an uncommon title can be priced without full awareness of its bibliography. One ILAB dealer's own catalogue note states that none of the French versions of this text is common, which is consistent with modest market supply.

Watch out for

Confirm the number of volumes actually present — this edition is normally 3 vols. in 8vo, and "set" in the listing is undefined; ask for a volume-by-volume page collation against the recorded pagination, and check for the half-titles and any folding plate or map if called for. Verify the title pages read 1747 Gosse throughout (the text also appeared in 1745 and 1772, and mixed sets exist), ask whether the small endpaper stamp is an institutional/library mark and whether any withdrawal evidence exists, and get photographs of joints, headcaps and hinges since "mild scuffing" understates the wear typical of calf of this date. Request confirmation that no leaves are supplied, washed, or repaired.
